Volunteering in Bristol

Bristol Heritage Centre
A project of the Bristol Millennium Committee during the summer and fall, 2000, was making improvements to the park where the “Welcome Centre” is located at the intersection of Hwy. 148 and Aylmer Road. This property is owned by the Municipality of Bristol and has been leased to the Bristol Heritage Centre, a newly formed not-for-profit organization incorporated under the laws of Quebec. Our commitment to the Municipality is to operate this Centre for the betterment of the community.
During the past year a number of improvements were made to the property. These included the drilling of a well; the installation of washrooms, a septic system and electricity; and the building of new entrances and a roadway. These improvements will greatly augment the impressions people have when they stop at this park. Last year during an eight week period, over 900 people visited this site.
This Centre is located at the entrance to the Pontiac and we want our visitors to obtain a good impression and receive a warm welcome. We are seeking input and help from all interested parties. If you can help or have ideas please give us a call.
Project underway and needing help to complete include:
- General cleanup and landscaping. A landscaping plan has been developed by Lynda Wegner, Naturescapes by Lynda. Donations from your gardens of plants and shrubs will be appreciated. Some people may wish to use the Bristol Heritage Centre for a memorial tree or shrub.
- A food concession by a private operator to supply the needs of cyclists and visitors.
- Improvements to the building to permit the display and marketing of local arts and crafts.
- Gordon Black and Jim Carmichael, Logs End Inc., have purchased the oldest log building (circa 1850) at Usborne Depot and would like it to house a museum on the logging industry. Logs End feel the Bristol Heritage Centre is the best location. Funding for the extensive costs in dismantling, moving, and erecting is a challenge and an opportunity for maintaining our heritage. All ideas and assistance are greatly appreciated.
